How to join
Joining takes a few months. We are eager to have you but there’s a process: an application requires a background check. (An arson conviction is the deal breaker). You’ll need a signed doctor’s note too saying that you are fit to serve. We will reimburse any costs/copays for a doctor’s visit for successful applicants who join. (After that, each year the department provides regular physicals).
Next is an interview, which is a chance to talk to us about what you want to do and to ask questions. (Though we hope you’ll stop by before that for a tour of the station and to meet us).
Training
Training is a commitment, but we provide all the training you need on the most advanced equipment. To be certified as a volunteer firefighter, a member must complete Basic Exterior Firefighting Operations (BEFO) a 79-hour course. Currently a hybrid program, some is online, some in-person, which allows for easier scheduling.
The firefighting classes are held at the county’s fire training center in Hamden. Advanced courses include working with active fires in a practice building. Other buildings on the campus are for searching for survivors. Specialized courses include ropes rescue, officer training, and other advanced skills. For information about upcoming classes, visit the Delaware County Emergency Services website.
